In-Home Respite Program

Caring for a loved one with developmental disabilities can be a daily challenge. Caring for an aging family member can also be stressful. Sometimes caregivers simply need a few hours away to rest and recharge so they can meet the ongoing needs of their family.

The HGH Respite Program offers caregivers that much-needed relief so that they may have the opportunity to go shopping, tend to family business or simply relax.

At HGH, our goal for our In-Home Respite program is to enable the caregiver to feel comfortable taking a break from the intensive supervision and care of their family member. HGH honors and respects the physical and emotional energy necessary to keep this commitment to keep the family member in their home.

While family members enjoy their break, trained respite workers provide support for the individual needing care. This one-on-one care is tailored to the needs and desires of the individual. Training and support are provided in a variety of areas, including:

  • Recreation and Leisure Activities
  • Community Integration
  • Shopping
  • Self-Advocacy
  • Social Skills
  • Personal Hygiene and Self-Help skills
  • Household tasks
  • Clothing Care
  • Communication

HGH hires qualified and caring professionals and honors the family’s and client’s choice of respite provider. San Diego Regional Center is the primary funding source for respite services. Hours authorized vary depending on individual needs and family support. Please check with your SDRC Service Coordinator regarding eligibility. Respite services are also provided on a private pay basis for families that are not affiliated with the San Diego Regional Center. Please contact Wendy Smith, Respite Coordinator at 619-938-2876 or wendy@guidinghands.org for additional information.

Senior Services:

Respite services are also available for individuals with changing care needs related to Alzheimer’s disease, stroke or aging. Services are private pay only.
